Smuts House

Smuts House

General Jan Smuts bought part of the Doornkloof farm in 1908 and lived there for the rest of his life. Smuts was a passionate indigenous botanist, apart from planting some shade trees near the homestead and pasture fields for his cattle, Smuts left the land as he had found it.

He celebrated the natural, indigenous flora and fauna of his South African highveld environment. He loved to step from front door of his home straight into the African veld, for Smuts the hours spent wandering on the hills of his beloved farm were an essential part of his spiritual well-being.
